How to use Google Maps as a Local Guide

I wanted to share a new feature that Google Maps recently added that can help organize your favorite spots all in one list!

Google Maps x Local Guides.
Over the summer Google Maps introduced a new feature that will make discovering your city easier!
Whether it's finding hidden gems in your city or marking a few spots that you want to visit while traveling abroad. This new feature makes it super EASY to have everything in a list form. I found this so helpful as a blogger because not only do I love taking photos but I also love trying out new spots around New York City. You're also able to see how far away these places are from each other which is awesome during shooting days to make my time more efficient. On the app you can make a lists of restaurants, cafes, bakeries, rooftops, or whatever you please and are able to share them with friends and family.

Anyone can sign up and become a #LocalGuide. What is great about becoming a Google Local Guide, you can share your favorite places with the world. I mean the best part of discovering a place is sharing it with others, right? You can take photos, write reviews, share a list to make it easier for others to discover new places and also visit your favorite places. While contributing as a local guide, you earn points, badges, and become an authority as a higher level local guide in your city! In this post, I'm sharing three cafes in Brooklyn that I think you should go to whenever you're in New York City. I made a list of some of my favorite places #OnGoogleMaps (click here) to see what places to check out!

How It Works:
Whether you're on the app on the phone or on your laptop/desktop, sign onto google maps.

  • Click on your Menu
  • Click on Your Places
  • Click on Saved
  • Click on + to make a new list!
It's really easy to create a list or multiple lists. You may notice there's already lists made for you like Favorites, Want To Go, and Starred Places. You're also able to have these lists on private or on public; so it's up to you!

As for becoming a Google Local Guide, (click here) to sign up!

  • Watch introductory video for more information
  • Go to Review a Place to start sharing places that you have visited
After that it's up to you to rack up your points, badges, and local guide levels. It's a fun way to connect with others on the platform and discovering awesome new places you have never heard about!

  4. Sweet! I did not know that there is such a thing. It will be useful for us since we do airbnb and they are often asking for recommendations. Now we can make a list of our favorite restaurants and maybe also find out what others consider favorites around here and discover more destinations.

  12. Normally, I don't pay that much attention to the tools that google rolls out, but I've really enjoyed this one. We just moved into a new city, and the hubby and I want to explore it as much as possible. Google made this way more convenient.

  13. We'll have to try this out and maybe even become local guides. We live walking distance from Universal Orlando so there is plenty to see and do around the house.

  16. Been a long-time Google Guide for our local area, though not super active to be sure. It is a nice feature and certainly helpful. Just another way Google is trying to ensure you never leave their platform.
