This has to be one of my new favorite books! I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie and I'm so glad I did because the book in my opinion is WAY better! When I finished this book, the tears were pouring down my face (Have a tissue box near while reading this book). Me Before You is heartbreaking, bittersweet and very powerful book. Once you immerse yourself in the book you do not want to put it down!
The Plot.
The book is about a woman, Louisa, who is desperate for a job and accepts a position as a private caregiver to a young disabled man, a quadriplegic, from a wealthy family. This man, Will Traynor, had once been on the fast track in life in terms of being a high powered business man who pursued a trilling life of action and adventure. After enduring an accident, he became paralyzed from the waist down. Now faced with the medical reality the he was never going to recover, his outlook on life has changed and he made a shocking, but yet oddly understandable decision which he felt was right for him much to the despair of his family. And this is when Lou came into the picture. She is in charge with the impossible task of cheering up a bitter, enraged, sarcastic man who wants to end his life. The relationship between Will and Louisa changes when she begins develop feelings for him. Without giving too much away, the plot contains a number of surprises and raises thoughtful questions about assisted suicide. The most compelling element isn't how Louisa helps Will. It's how Will helps free Louisa in a many ways she can ever imagined.
Book Review.
This book allows the reader to feel empathy for two different life perspectives at the same time. This book was well written and kept intriguing me to turn to the next page. I loved the relationship between Lou and Will. They consistently joked with one another and the flow of their chemistry felt natural. They has some special moments between them that Jojo Moyes captured beautifully, especially at the end of the story, under the unfortunate circumstances. There are so many valuable life lessons embedded in this story such as to find a purpose in life, follow your passions, and live life to your fullest potential. It also reminds us to value each minute, count your blessings, and cherish each of the things we easily take for granted.
Like I mentioned earlier I read the book before the movie came out in theaters. I know it's hard to fit everything into a movie time frame but I wasn't too happy with the movie. They left out so many parts of the book which was disappointing but still highlighted the message the book was portraying. Don't get me wrong, I still cried like baby in the theaters but I wish they included more from the book. I highly recommend this book, I already told everyone I know to go ahead and read it and go see the movie!
