Top of the Rock | NYC Tips

November 13, 2016

If you're into photography, a tourist, or just bored, go visit Top of the Rock! I had family from Colombia visiting so it was perfect time to do touristy things. Top of the Rock in my opinion is better than the Empire State Building for a 360 view of the city with unobstructed views. This place does get busy during the holidays and of course sunset hour. Here are some tips if you plan on visiting!

Location.
Top of the Rock is located on 45 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, 1011. The closest subway is  the B, D, F and M trains to 47-50th street. The main entrance is on 50th street between 5th and 5th avenues.

Ticket Pricing.
There are other pricing packages available that you check out through the official website (click here)

Tips on visiting Top of the Rock.
  • It is open from 8am to midnight but varies during holiday season.
  • Try going as soon as it opens so it's not as crowded like it is later on the day.
  • Sunset hour is the best time for photography, but it's also the most crowded. If you want a good spot plan accordingly and try to arrive an hour earlier to set up.
  • There are security checks and if it's a busy time there are long lines to get to the elevator. Keep that in mind so you won't miss the sunset going down.
  • There are THREE LEVELS of observation decks (67th, 69th, and 70th floor). The 67th floor is the most crowded. The 69th floor has more space but both bottom floors have floor to ceiling glass windows. The 70th floor has the best and unobstructed view of the whole city.
  • There are no tripods, or professional video cameras allowed.
  • Try checking Groupon or Livingsocial for discounts on the ticket.
  • You can buy a ticket online and don't have to wait in line.
  • Also certain times can be sold out, so keep that in mind when planning your trip.
